Tolog Review: Jasper Jones

Jasper Jones
by Craig Silvey
reviewed by Fiona Mass

Jasper Jones might sound like any other mystery novel at first, but takes many unexpected plot twists that will have you on the edge of your seat. This book is very hard to put down once you start reading, which makes the novel all the more suspenseful. Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey is a mystery, thriller, written in first person by the main character, Charles Bucktin, that shows how the views of society do not always match up with the truth.

The novel begins with Charlie asleep in his room when there is a knock on his window. He looks outside and Jasper Jones is standing there. Jasper Jones has a fearsome reputation in their small town of Corrigan for being a thief, liar, thug, and is blamed for every crime even if he had nothing to do with it. Parents threaten their kids that they will end up like Jasper if they don't behave. On this particular night, Jasper leads Charlie into a small clearing in the woods at the edge of town. What they find there will change their lives forever, Laura Wishart hangs from a branch, dead.

The whole novel, Jasper and Charlie must solve the crime and figure out who killed Laura before the police find out she is dead. If Laura is found dead, Jasper will be immediately at fault and arrested, even though he claims to not have killed her. The novel is thrilling and suspenseful with a new twist at every turn. Will the boys be able to figure out who killed Laura in time? Was it Jasper Jones? Will Jasper be arrested for suspected murder of Laura Wishart?

This book was one of the best mystery novels I’ve read in awhile, it was not a predictable murder that you could guess from reading the back. This novel was full of plot twists that left me awestruck and left me reading page after page until I finished. It was a relatively easy read, and definitely worth it. I enjoyed the writing style, there was some humor and the author was able to express Charlie’s feelings and thoughts in a clear manner that enabled the reader to easily connect with Charlie and feel what he was going through. There were rarely any dull moments in this book which made it a pretty quick read. I would recommend it to anyone that enjoys a good mystery and thrilling adventure.
