Tolog Review: Anne of Green Gables

Anne of Green Gables
by Lucy Maud Montgomery
reviewed by Hannah Sobota

Lucy Maud (L.M.) Montgomery, a Canadian author wrote Anne of Green Gables, a successful novel which led to thirteen sequels. The novel tells the story of an orphan girl and is set on Prince Edward Island where Montgomery was born. The title of the book fits, because Anne is the central character, and she helps out on the farm at the Green Gables.

The story takes place in the early 1900’s in Avonlea, where Matthew Cuthbert and his sister Marilla need help on their farm at Green Gables. They decide that they want to adopt a boy, but mistakenly end up with an unusual girl, Anne Shirley. Anne has a huge imagination and loves to talk and dream a lot. After hearing about Anne’s past, Marilla feels bad, and decides that Anne can stay with her and Matthew, as long as she stays out of trouble. But Anne has a hard time getting along with others and listening to adults. Throughout the book, Anne looks for and discovers kindred spirits that she considers her best friends. She becomes best friends with a girl her age, Diana Barry. Matthew and Marilla begin to realize that their lives are changing completely ever since Anne has become a part of their family.
