Tolog Review: The Book Thief

The Book Thief
by Marcus Zusak
reviewed by Camille Trevor, class of 2015

The Book Thief, by Mark Zusak, centers protagonist Leisel Meminger growing up in Germany during World War II. Leisel lives with her two foster parents, Hans and Rosa Hubermann, in a society that is tremendously strict on ensuring the obedience to Adolf Hitler’s orders. Leisel’s major dilemma during the novel is searching for answers and discovering her individualized identity. She endures experiences that influence her opinions about the world she lives in. Leisel’s confusion about her identity stems from not knowing who her biological parents are, to coping with the death of her little brother, to not understanding the cultural exceptions to behave in a Nazi-filled society, and so on. Because so many of her questions are unanswered, she is left with uncertainty about every life experience, including situations concerning her family and also Nazi Germany. As a response to all sufferings in her life, she discovers an escape through the power of words. She is amazed by words’ abilities to express personal feelings and opinions in such an eloquent manner. Her amazement provokes an internal awakening that results in her questioning why society is the way it is. Throughout the novel, Leisel faces many challenges that help her come to understand and question the unjust society she lives in.

This book is unquestionably one of my top favorites of all time. The story is so magnificently written that I found myself reading nearly 150 pages a day and not setting it down at all. There are no dull moments because every experience is significant to the general progression of the story. In addition, every character is distinguished so perfectly because the narrator uses various associations and symbols that belong to each character individually. One of the most compelling aspects of the story is the fact that the narrator plays a crucial role. Overall, the story itself takes unpredictable turns leading to an inevitable yet surprising ending. I guarantee anyone will not be disappointed after reading this immediate classic. If you like historical fiction, you'll love this book!
