Tolog Review: Looking for Alaska

Looking for Alaska
by John Green
reviewed by Payton Tomkins

Looking For Alaska by John Green is an extremely suspenseful novel, but just went on for too long. Many books tend to be more interesting with more detail, but this book seemed to drag on with detail. The story is about a boy named Miles (most of the time referred to as Pudge). The main theme of the book was how influences in your life can change the type of person who you are. In the books case, Pudge's influence was Alaska Young. Alaska Young is a very mysterious and adventurous girl. At the beginning of the book, Pudge was just a shy boy, but towards the end, he turns into a completely different person. The writing style of John Green makes it extremely easy to follow the timeline and growth of the characters, which is very helpful. Something I did not enjoy about the book was that it was in two stages and was a little too long. The first stage of the book was very interesting, but the first part of the second stage was a little dull, which made it hard to finish the book. The book does not have many extreme plot twists because there are many context clues that help the reader figure out what will happen next. Overall, I thought that Looking for Alaska had a very good plot, but I thought that the actual book was a little slow and was not very surprising at all. Although I felt this way, I would definitely recommend this book to a classmate. It is a good book for our age group, and not too difficult of a book to read at all.
