Tolog Review: One Day

One Day
by David Nicholls
reviewed by Payton Tomkins

The book One Day was definitely a book worth reading. The two main characters our Dexter and Emma. They meet after their graduation, and decide to spend the night together. This night is not so much a romantic night, but a night that starts their friendship. After this night, they do not see each other, but keep in contact. Emma is extremely interesting in writing and being in plays, while Dexter travels the whole world, finding various women to please him along the way. Eventually they are both living in London: Emma as a waitress, and Dexter as a television presenter. Emma and Dexter both want to be with one another, but end up seeing other people. While Emma’s career as a teacher becomes successful, Dexter’s crashes because of drug abuse. There friendship ends, and when they see each other again, Emma finds Dexter in love, and she is still longing for him. They eventually end up getting married, and while going to look at a house, Emma gets in a biking accident and dies. Dexter finds himself extremely distraught.

I thought that this book was extremely interesting. It was definitely not your average love story. There were so many plot twists in the book, which made it extremely suspenseful, but confusing at the same time. For example, Emma and Dexter seem to be so in love, but when the fighting and conflict gets in the way, it makes it extremely confusing to tell if they really love each other or not. At times the book was a little slow. I feel that at the beginning, there was too much detail about Emma’s job being a waitress, which made it a little more challenging to read. Overall, I would give this book 3 out of 5 star. I would give it 3 because it was a very intriguing storyline, but it was a little confusing. One Day was definitely worth reading.
