Just Listen

What would the world be like if no one expressed how they truly feel? What if everyone kept all their emotions to themselves? Would the world be the same? In Just Listen by Sarah Dessen, Annabel Greene keeps the truth to herself because she is scared of what others may think. Everyone thinks her life is perfect, but in reality, it is far from perfect. Her sister has an eating disorder, her other sister has communication problems, her mother is suffering from severe depression, and her father does not show emotion or feelings. Annabel tries shielding the truth she has been hiding for so long but soon realizes that it is impossible to do so forever. She eventually opens up to Owen Armstrong and realizes that talking to someone can only make her stronger.
This book really stood out to me because it shows the struggles of being a teenager and what it can do to someone. Sarah Dessen describes how ones surroundings can affect their actions and who they are. Since Annabel is surrounded by people who are not open to talk, she is not used to speaking out. This affects her because she is too afraid to tell the truth and speak up for herself, which causes her to have personal conflicts with herself. While reading this book, I was very anxious to know what would happen next. Sarah Dessen does a great job of mixing real-life situations and romance to create an addicting novel that I was unable to let go of. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who appreciates teen-fiction at its best.
