Looking for Alaska
by John Green
reviewed by Ashley Gomez
Looking for Alaska seemed like every other book John Green has written. Based on the back of the book, I was sure it would be exactly the same as every other book he has written, but I read it because it is John Green and somehow he always ends up surprising me. And, sure enough he did. Now, it is my favorite book of his.
The main character, Miles, is a teenage boy about to start a new adventure at boarding school. When his parents drop him off he soon realizes that his time here will be hot and uncomfortable for him and he is scared of the things he will have to go through there. In his room he finds his new roommate, who goes by the “Colonel”. He introduces Miles to his friends Alaska and Takumi. And the Colonel gives Miles the nickname “Pudge”. As soon as he met Alaska, Pudge’s view of the school changed, he thought she was the most amazing girl and she showed him the world in a whole new way that changed Pudge forever.
John Green wrote this book always hinting the reader to be on the edge of their chair waiting for one thing after another to shock them out of it. He wrote this to be a book so that whenever anything good happened, something bad was just around the corner.
In my opinion, this book is one of the most amazing books John Green has ever written. He really showed the emotion in the book and painted a clear picture of the scenery and the characters. I really do believe that this book could not be any better and I definitely recommend this book to anybody who likes John Green novels or loves to read romances.
