Tolog Review: A Great and Terrible Beauty

A Great and Terrible Beauty
by Libba Bray
reviewed by Claudia Ruder

Sorcery, magic, psychic, all words that could describe the Gemma Doyle. A teenage girl is forced from her home in India to an all girls boarding school right outside of London, England. It started right after her mother was murdered. The more she tries to stop her powers, the more they control her. Gemma soon gets caught up with the leader of the schools most powerful clique, Felicity Worthington. All goes downhill when she finds her mother's connection with the school, and a fighting group call the Order. Secrets soon take over Gemma’s life. All of this can be found in the amazing book A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray.

Libba Bray sucks you in right from the beginning. Starting with the main character watching her mother die and her whole life being flipped upside down. The enchanting writing, and the mystery is the reason this book is so delightful. It has just the right amount of suspense, mystery, and tragedy. A Great and Terrible Beauty challenges the ideas of feminism and economic status in the 19th century. This book is one of a kind. There is an interesting twist on every page that the reader never sees coming.

This is one of my favorite books I have ever read. I normally do not like fantasy and books about magic, but the way A Great and Terrible Beauty is written makes me love it. The quality of writing and how Libba Bray writes the tone makes me fall in love with the characters and their stories. It feels as if I know them, and have been there throughout their long journeys. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to be taken to a whole new magical world.
