Tolog Review: My Sister's Keeper

My Sister's Keeper
by Jodi Picoult
reviewed by Audrey Ciampa

My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult is about the Fitzgerald family, whose eldest daughter Kate has been battling a rare form of leukemia since she was two years old. When doctors couldn’t find a donor for Kate, her parents, Sara and Brian, conceived a child who was a genetic match for Kate. Sara and Brian named her Anna. Since the day Anna was born she has given Kate blood, bone marrow, and anything else Kate needs to survive. For 13 years Anna gives Kate anything she needs until one day when her mother tells her she needs to donate a kidney to Kate. Anna then decides to go to a lawyer to file a lawsuit to sue her parents for the rights of her own body.

Throughout My Sister’s Keeper various characters are used to narrate the story. The points of view are those of Anna; Sara; Brian; Jesse, Anna and Kate’s brother; Campbell, Anna’s attorney and Julia, Anna’s guardian ad liteum. I like the way Jodi Picoult writes the chapters because you can see the different views of all the characters in the novel. Each character has a different way of describing what is happening. For example, Sara’s chapters are mostly flashbacks while Anna’s chapters are mostly what is happening in the present time of the novel. Through everyone’s perspective you can see how they felt about what was happening in the story. In Brian’s scenes he showed how hard it was to have a sick child and how emotional it got at certain points of the book.

I really enjoyed the story because it was inspiring and kept me wanting to continue reading. It showed a real life situation and how a family got through it, without growing apart. This is one of the best books I’ve ever read and I recommend it to anyone that is looking for a great book!

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a novel that is really emotional and one that you’ll never want to put down! This book uses a lot of medical terms that will help you understand what Kate is going through. Through all the things that the Fitzgerald family faced, they persevered and got through it together. My Sister’s Keeper is a really moving book. Despite the many difficult situations they were going through family always came first.
