Thirteen Reasons Why
by Jay Asher
reviewed by Barbara Byrne

Imagine receiving cassette tapes of a classmate who committed suicide which tell the 13 reasons why she decided to end her life and that you are one of them. Clay Jensen lives this horror in Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. This book is a suspenseful thriller that you won’t want to put down.

One afternoon after school, Clay Jensen comes home to find a package on his doorstep addressed to him. In the package, he discovers thirteen tapes made by Hannah Baker, a classmate who had killed herself just two weeks prior. She had made these tapes to tell the thirteen reasons why she had decided to kill herself and had sent them to the people who are responsible. Hannah’s rules are simple, the person who receives the tapes has to listen to them to find out why he or she is responsible for her death and has to pass them on to the next person. If the tapes are not mailed to the next person, the second set of tapes will be sent out for the world to hear. Clay is forced to listen to them, one by one. He discovers the other people on the list and why they are partly responsible for her death. What he discovers forever changes his life.

This book by Jay Asher will make you look at life differently and won’t get out of your mind. It is a great thriller that will have your mind racing.
