Looking for Alaska

reviewed by Maya Mercade

Looking for Alaska, by John Green, is the intriguing novel of a boy named Miles “Pudge” Halter and the way he goes about his high school years. He starts out as a kid more on the shy side and turns into the kid that comes out of his comfort zones. His main goal was to find his “Great Perhaps” after reading a poem because he was known for knowing famous peoples last words. It all begins when he has a going away party because he was about to leave for a boarding school called Culver Creek and he is about to experience a whole new world. When Pudge arrives to Culver Creek he begins with meeting his roommate, Chip Martin, a.k.a “the Colonel”. Although the Colonel is known to be one of the popular kids on campus, he has no problem bringing Pudge along with him to meet new people going into junior year. When Pudge meets the beautiful and well-known Alaska Young, he immediately develops a connection with her. He also meets Chips other friend, Takumi and them four develop a great bond with each other throughout the novel. Pudge knew that eventually he was going to like Alaska even though he started to like a sophomore named Lara. Him and Alaska grow very close throughout there time spent together and she brings Pudge out of his very confined comfort zone. The book ends tragically with Pudge wondering how he is going to make it through the rest of his time at Culver Creek.
