Looking for Alaska, a Tragic Tale of Contrasting Personalities
Looking for Alaska by John Green is centered around the character Miles, who later calls himself “Pudge”. Pudge is sent to boarding school where he befriends his roommate known as the “Colonel” and his friends; Takumi, Lara, and Alaska. The five share dangerous and outgoing adventures that bring them closer together as friends.
Eventually, Pudge begins to like Alaska because he believes she is the most beautiful person he has ever seen. Even when Lara begins to grow feelings for Pudge, he still refuses to go anywhere without Alaska. Toward the end of the novel a tragedy occurs that leaves Pudge in a guilty state, believing he is the cause for this accident. This incident adds mystery and suspense in the novel and teaches the reader to respect others
and their personal life, and that blaming a person for a certain issue will never solve a problem.
Looking for Alaska never failed to make me laugh, smile, or cry, and because of that I recommend this book for all ages. In my opinion “Looking for Alaska” is one of the best books I have ever read because it made me realize that at any moment your life can change for better or for worse. If anything, I would have wanted to see more of a connection between Pudge and Alaska. I believe that if John Green had given more insight on the relationship between them the reader would have been able to relate to them on an even deeper level. Full of humor, mystery, romance, and suspense Looking for Alaska by John Green will leave you with a thousand smiles and a million tears.
