reviewed by Mia Valencia-Chanler

A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry, is set in the 1950s with an African- American family, the Youngers, living in Chicago. They receive $10,000 dollars from Mr. Younger whom passed away. Everyone in the Younger family wants to do something different with the money than the other. The family is constantly fighting over their own, different dreams instead of functioning as a family.

As the story progresses the reader finds out that Ruth is pregnant. However, she is scared to tell her parents because of the issue with money her family has. She mentions to Walter she is thinking about getting an abortion. During this, Mama buys a house in white neighborhood called Clybourne Park. This does not rest well with the white neighborhood. Mr. Linder is told by the Youngers new neighbor to offer them money in order so they would not move.

Beneatha also denies selfish George Muchison, even though he is rich. She rather be with someone who has character. However, she then gets a proposal to be Jospeh Asagai’s wife. He is the man she is with from Nigeria. He is the opposite of George Muchison because he wants her to finish medical school and to pursue the things that she wants.
The Youngers family moves out of their apartment, ignoring the offer from Mr. Linder. The future looks bright for the family as they start on their new odyssey.
